The Election Of 1860 On Succession Of The Southern States...

A: Plan of the Investigation The election of 1860 was a crucial point in our countries history. The Tensions were high between the north and southern states and the issue of slavery was the biggest problem at the time. The election of Lincoln led to the perception that the south and its interests would lose control of the federal government and that the new government would ultimately get rid of slavery altogether. The aim of this Investigation is to come to a conclusion how much of an effect Lincoln’s election into office had on succession of the southern states from the union. B: Summary of Evidence Slavery and its future were intense issues that led to the disruption of the union. The dispute lead to succession, and succession brought about a war. The Northern and Western states and territories were fighting in order to preserve the union while the South fought in order to establish a confederation of states under its own constitution where slavery would not be questioned. The South was agriculturally based. They used slaves to tend to their large plantations and perform jobs that nobody would do. Though only a small portion of the southern population owned slaves, slavery was interwoven into the economy of the south. They could be used to pay off debts or rented or traded. The amount of slaves a person owned contributed to their social position as well as bestowed upon them respect from other southerners.
